THE SCIENCE DISPATCH

How Do Amgen Canada’s Contributions Help Communities?

How do you change the world? It’s a big question, and Amgen Canada is doing its part to answer it. We start by making human therapeutics that combat serious illnesses, but we don’t stop there. Through volunteer and outreach efforts, our employees ensure their communities remain as vital as our commitment to serve patients.

To support this vision, we’ve outlined a few of the causes that Amgen Canada has recently assisted. In their own ways, each of these initiatives show the key to changing the world starts in your own community.

Hitting the Ground Running at the Running and Reading Challenge:

An old adage states that children are the future, but for the 1.2 million needy Canadian kids, that future is far from certain. Amgen Canada seeks to change that, which is why it works with the Mississauga-based non-profit organization Start2Finish to help children in need achieve success.

The Running & Reading Club Program represents a key part of that mission. Aimed at improving literacy and physical activity, the 32-week after-school initiative comes to a conclusion with the Start2Finish 5K Running and Reading Challenge. Known as Canada’s largest children’s run, the challenge represents the culmination of participants’ months of training. On May 26, Amgen Canada Executive Medical Director Ponda Motsepe-Ditshego, Strategic Planning and Information Sr. Manager Brent Serson, and Business Analysis and Information Sr. Manager Oral Roomes were all on-hand with their families to volunteer at the event.

"It was truly gratifying to see how Start2Finish, along with Amgen's help, is making a positive difference in the lives of kids who live in difficult circumstances" said Roomes. "We could feel the energy and confidence in the kids as they achieved their goals!"

At a ceremony following the challenge, Serson and Roomes presented participants with awards celebrating their accomplishments. In addition to supporting the Running & Reading Club Program through the funding of science books, Amgen Canada donates to the Backpack Program, a Start2Finish effort that provides backpacks and school supplies to children in need.

Amgen Assembles for Scientists in Schools:

Many of Amgen’s community initiatives are dedicated to fostering a lifelong love of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in Canadian youth. On May 31, we continued that tradition by hosting science education organization Scientists in School at our headquarters. Together, our staff assembled kits for science-based workshops that cater to children in underserved schools. With support from companies like Amgen Canada, Scientists in Schools helps underprivileged youth participate in STEM activities and develop an early understanding of the importance of science in everyday life.

Amgen Canada Goes Along for the Ride for Heart Fundraiser:

On one Sunday morning each year, Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway close to traffic so cyclists, runners, and walkers can take over for a good cause. It’s all part of Manulife Ride for Heart, a charity event for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. On June 3, over 60 Amgen employees joined 150,000 other participants who raised $6 million for research funding.
